Welcome to 2016: Can You Articulate Your Vision for the Future?
“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget that errand.”
In my work with executives and high-performing professionals, I have found that there is a profound difference between the individuals who have a vision for the future and those that do not.
You have probably seen this yourself in your own career experience. You have likely noticed that some people are incredibly motivated; they’re passionate at work, they bring energy to the office consistently and they seem to flourish.
The people I just described are much different than those who seem disconnected, lackluster or maybe even burned out at work.
It’s Not Just a Vision…
When I talk about “vision,” I don’t just mean a picture in your mind of what you would like the future to be. I’m talking about something deeper than that, something more meaningful.
I’m talking about the answer to the question, “What is it that you would really like to create in your life?”
When I ask my clients this question, I am most often met with silence. Or perhaps even an indignant chuckle.
I understand! It takes courage and deep honor for the self to be willing to boldly state what it is that you most truly want in your life, and that can be hard. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the people who are deeply connected to their wants and create a vision of the future based on their wants are much more likely to be successful in their endeavors.
…It’s the “Why” Behind the Vision
Creating a vision is important, but even more important than that is to craft a vision that speaks deeply to you.
Why do you want a raise or promotion? For more money? Why? What do you want the extra income for? Security? To send your children to college? To finally visit the vineyards of South Australia?
The more succinctly you can express your vision to yourself and to the world, the more powerful it is, and the more motivation you will feel to take courageous steps in the direction of your dreams.
I understand that this can feel really overwhelming, because I’ve been there! Fortunately, I had the guidance of more than one coach to help me get where I am today. In fact, I believe it is so important to have training from experts in your field that I have agreed to be part of a complimentary upcoming tele summit. Stay tuned for more details!
